Our duty to nature

In the past several centuries, humans have gone beyond the limits of their imagination to transform the world into what it is today. However, in all our might lies a great challenge that has recently come into sight. For, throughout the many advances people undertook, they rarely paid attention to the side effects they were causing to the environment. Today, more and more species are becoming extinct, and many others have great difficulty finding food and shelter. Therefore, I believe it is of paramount importance that we protect animals and other wildlife.

To begin, it is in our own interest to protect the balance in nature, because it affects us directly and indirectly. Nature consists of ecosystems that are like a spider’s web. A change in one part of this web may lead to problems in other parts. Losing one type of animal or plant can cause a disruption in the web of life; for instance, killing a species of pollinating insects can lead to crop shortages, as nearly all plants need to be pollinated in order to grow. Thus, humans must strive to keep the natural balance.

Second, we need to make sure animals and other wildlife are safe, as they also influence our economy and daily lives. For instance, it is not uncommon for some forest animals to invade human dwellings in search of food and shelter, after they’ve lost their habitats. Moreover, many wildlife species are a key element of some industries. Pollinating birds and insects are in the center of the agricultural business, as they help crops develop. Losing these pollinators means people must resort to other, more expensive methods of pollination, thus hurting businesses.

Finally, people must consider conserving wildlife a duty, as the world becomes a poorer place when species become extinct, and animals have just as much right to live on this planet as us. Maintaining the diversity of plant and animal life gives us many opportunities to explore nature. A lot of the medicines we use nowadays have originally been discovered in plants in the rainforest. Moreover, from an ethical standpoint, all life on this planet should be treated equally. Therefore, we should think seriously about killing animals and other wildlife with our activities.

To sum up, people have a duty to protect wildlife in order to counter the damage that has already been caused to the ecosystems, to natural habitats and to our own lives.
