Are people nowadays too concerned with their diet and their appearance?

Appearance is one of the most vital parts of interpersonal communication. It is a nonverbal way of expressing oneself; therefore, a good-looking person might have much better relations with people than someone who is looking badly. Nowadays, someone may even be turned down after a job interview because the prospective employer didn’t like his or her style of clothing. Therefore, I believe that people today pay too much attention to their looks and diet.

First and foremost, having a good appearance is becoming an obsession with most people, especially young ones. Even though it is natural to look good to attract partners from the opposite sex, some put too much effort in deciding what clothes to wear. One example is that not even girls but also boys regularly go shopping to add new things to their wardrobe. In addition, they are prepared to give large sums of money just to buy the right jacket or the right pair of shoes. Another proof that looking good is now a wide-spread obsession is that many do exercise not to be healthy but to have a nice body. Fitness centers are full of people who would do anything in order to have a nice appearance, even take supplements that pump up their muscles but may render irreparable damage to the body,.

Next, many people now have a mania for eating healthy and keeping a rigorous diet. The increased incidence of anorexia cases is one proof of that. Many teenagers especially have a much smaller calorie intake than what’s necessary for a normal person to carry out vital bodily functions. Furthermore, products with the label “healthy” or with a reduced calorie count are getting more and more buyers. This means that a lot of people are prepared to eat food that has a smaller nutritional value and may even taste bad just to look good. Almost everyone in our modern society is ready to sacrifice a lot when appearance is concerned.

To wrap it up, most people today are becoming more and more interested in the way they look and in what kind of food they eat. In their obsession, some might even do damage to themselves, as the ostensibly healthy lifestyles, with a lot of exercise and a “healthy” diet, may actually have bad effects on the body. Clearly, over-exercising and eating heavily processed food are going to create more problems for many people, so we need to be careful.
