In my opinion, a greater deal of what and who we are is built, rather than innate. Even though we are predisposed to certain positive and negative character traits at birth, what truly affects what kind of people we will become is the way we are raised.
One crucial element of upbringing is character building, or developing strength of character in children. This is important because having a strong character is helpful in numerous situations in life. For instance, by developing a sense of responsibility, a child learns to analyze a situation before coming to an action. In addition, children who learn to be accountable for their conduct can take the blame for their mistakes, but may also receive credit for their success. A second reason why parents should develop a strong character in their children is that people with powerful personality traits are more respected and successful. If parents teach their children to be sincere, fair, and open-minded, children would have certain moral rules to abide by. Thus, when these kids grow up, they will be less likely to have weak relationships, periods of depression, or unprofitable businesses. Even if many people assert that being dishonest has become more profitable, I believe it is just the opposite.
As for me, I think I have a relatively strong character when compared to many of my friends. Although I am an emotional and compassionate person who often buys food for stray cats and can be easily moved to tears, I believe this is not a negative character trait, and that as a whole I have a strong character. I owe this to my parents, especially to my father. When I do not know how to do something, he never does it on my behalf. Instead, he shows me how to do it, or he instructs me and stands by me while I’m trying on my own. This helped me become more self-reliable and persevering. Also, my parents taught me how to be honest without hurting others or how not to be hypocritical: by making a careful word choice when speaking, and by saying nothing if I have nothing positive to say.
In conclusion, I believe character building plays a great role in what a person is like, and how my parents have raised me is a good example.
